Il colore verde
Nicola Fano

Ecco, Roberto Cavallini io credo voglia indurre chi guarda a farlo in modo consapevole.

The green colour
Nicola Fano

A colour is a colour, it has no particular ideological or poetic implications. Is the artist, eventually, who combines a colour in the way that it gives an ideological or poetic value to your eyes: Cézanne’s azure, Picasso’s blue, Gastone Novelli’s white. Colour is the way the artist put his eye on the world; an eye ready to pick the azure, or to transfigure everything in a painful blue, or to erase the chaos under the dominance of white.
Of course, as the eye of the artist is traslated by the paintbrush, the eye of the photographer gets trought the diaphragm. So neither Roberto Cavallini’s green is ideological or poetic: the colour green acquires that qualities by accumulation – that is the repeated exposure to the colour in its many facets – because, inevitably, in front of the mechanical eye of the photographer is always exposed something green. True or false that it is: it’s as if Roberto Cavallini was able to magnify the prevalence of greenery in our reality.
This, of course, thanks to the accumulation (that is the multiplication of images to the attention of those who look at them) becomes an ideological or poetic gesture. Consider the “Ashtray Green”: suppose you see this photo alone, out of the context of the reportage, with no accumulation. So? It would be a shred of a city and it would not have that deep sense of (ideological) denunciation that it gives us if you put it in relation to the other pictures: green is a colour, it assumes another meanings depending on the eye of who looks at it. Here, I think that Roberto Cavallini wants to induce those who are looking at his photos to do it in a conscious way.
And how do you get this result? You need to purify your eyes and then re-adjust it with the critical sense (that is what we lost everywhere in our bad times). Well, we start getting back to the origins: to the childish discovery of colour and shapes. A free discovery of pure pleasure and perception (a colour is a colour). It is at the end, with the accumulation, that the meaning is constructed, that the colour “gets” a value. Look at “Green Carpet”, “Green Rejected” or “Generational Replacement” and try to take the two steps back that Roberto Cavallini asks you to do (the discovery and then the critical analysis): only then you will enter into the game. But it will be worth it.
